Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass

And if you don’t think Luncheon in the Grass could get any weirder..

FIRST POST. Exciting, yes?

My name is Alessandra Gomez, and I graduated high school from the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. I’ve worked in metals, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, painting, and photo. I am now a student at SAIC in the painting department, but I might explore different departments in the future. I hope to improve in Dan Gustin’s figure painting class and change the way that I see light, form, and space. I want to become more exacting with the way that I mix colors and render an image. I hope to experiment and explore video and performance art in my CORE class because I haven’t had any prior experience. Oh, this is also my first blog. I can’t wait to make my own website near the end of the semester because I have no idea how to make one on my own. Bye!

PS-The image is a piece that I made senior year in metals class. I melted scrap metal into an ingot, then spent weeks stretching, hammering, cleaning (patina and rouge), and soldering.

Reported injuries while making the piece:

  1. Shocked myself on accident (thanks to the Pickle). Pickling is a metal surface treatment used to remove impurities, such as stains, inorganic contaminants, rust or scale, from ferrous metals, copper, and aluminum alloys.[1] A solution called pickle liquor, which contains strong acids, is used to remove the surface impurities. It is commonly used to descale or clean steel in various steelmaking processes.
  2. Accidentally hit my hand with the hammer, luckily, it was a raw hide hammer
  3. …used a lot of bandaids
